Kirtankhola

Kirtankhola is a stream that begins from Sayeshtabad in Barisal area and finishes into the Gajalia close Gabkhan khal (waterway). The aggregate length of the waterway is around 160 kilometers (99 mi).

In antiquated times, the Ganges used to stream in three courses in Bengal, to be specific the Nalini, the Haldini and the Pabni. The Pabni, meeting with the antiquated Padma River joint stream of which named as the Sugandha, coursed through Madaripur south of Faridpur, again renaming as the Andar Khan or the Arial Khan. The Arial Khan stretched out in a few courses in Madaripur and moved through Barisal. Streaming forward and accepting different names, the Arial Khan fell into the Bay of Bengal as the Haringhata.

In south of Madaripur, the Andar khal or the Arial Khan was named as the Sugandha and was the best stream of Bakla Chandradwip or the South Bengal. In course of time, the deltaic branches of the Sugandha were silted up and step by step vanished making different islands or singes in numerous parts of the more prominent Barisal locale. With the progression of time, the name Sugandha was lost and the name Arial Khan turned out to be more noticeable. One of the branches of this Arial Khan streams eastbound close Shayeshtabad and falls into the Bay of Bengal in the wake of meeting with the meghna at Sahbazpur in bhola. Another branch of Arial Khan streams south-southwest as the Kirtankhola up to Nalchity keeping the Barisal town on its west bank. The further course of the waterway falls into the Bay of Bengal getting different names at different spots lastly as the Haringhata.
